What Type of Gold Suits You Best?

You’re out with your friends and notice the necklace or earrings one of them is wearing. It looks amazing on her, so why wouldn’t it look good on you? The next day, you go to the store, find the same thing, and try it on. As soon as you look in the mirror, it looks nothing like the way it did on your friend. It just falls flat and doesn’t look as nice.

It’s not your fault when this happens. Just like there are certain colors that don’t flatter you in clothing, there can be colors in jewelry that don’t work for you. Depending on your skin undertone, certain types of gold may not be the best choice.

What Are the Different Types of Gold?

Not all gold is what you expect. Besides gold coming in different karats, there are also different colors of gold. Here’s what you need to know about each one.

Yellow Gold

This gold is the most popular and traditional gold. It’s made by mixing pure gold with silver, copper, and zinc to help the metal harden and be less susceptible to damage. Of all of the gold colors, yellow gold is the most hypoallergenic and requires the least maintenance.

White Gold

White gold is gold mixed with platinum or palladium. In some cases, it also includes nickel and zinc. White gold is more durable and scratch-resistant than yellow gold and is more affordable.

Rose Gold

Also known as pink gold, this is gold that is mixed with copper and silver. Rose gold is the most affordable and most durable option of any of the gold colors.

What Is My Skin Undertone?

Now that you understand the different types of gold, it’s important to understand how to match the tone of gold to the undertone of your skin.

First, your skin undertone is not the same as your skin color. Just because you have lighter or darker skin color does not guarantee that you have a certain skin undertone.

Skin undertones are broken into three major categories:

  • Warm: Your skin will lean to having peachy, yellow, or golden undertones.
  • Cool: Your skin will lean to having pink, red, or blue undertones.
  • Neutral: your skin will be a mixture of both warm and cool.

You can’t simply look at yourself and know what your undertone is. Because they are undertones, they are less obvious and take a bit more work to determine. There is a vein test that some people use, in which you look at your veins and try to see if they look blue/purple (cool undertone) or green (warm undertone), but it can be unreliable.

The problem with the vein test is that it only looks at the undertones around your wrist and ignores the rest of your body. Your skin varies in tone and pigment. What might be true for your wrist might not be true for your neck, ears, or cheeks when you are trying on necklaces and earrings. A wrist can have a warm undertone while a neck can have a colder one.

To add another complication, you have to consider what makeup you are wearing. Makeup covers and changes your skin undertones. It’s possible for a person to switch their undertone to warm or cold using makeup.

So, what can you do? The best way to test your skin undertone is through trial and error. Try on different clothes. Grab a pile of clothes in various colors and see which color works best for you.

If you look best in blues, purples, and emerald greens, you probably have a cool undertone. However, if you look better in earth tones like reds, oranges, yellows, and olive greens, you have a warm undertone. If you look great in every color, you have neutral undertones.

What Type of Gold Works Best with My Skin Undertone?

Your skin undertone can help determine which pieces of jewelry look good on you. If you are warm-toned, yellow and rose golds may look great on you. If you are cool-toned, white gold might look best on you. If you are neutral, you can probably pull off all types of gold.

While undertones can help you when picking out jewelry, what is most important is to find a piece that works well for you. It’s not bad or wrong for you to choose jewelry that doesn’t fit into the ‘ideal’ color for your skin. As long as you feel comfortable and think you look good, it’s not a bad piece of jewelry.
